January 6, 2020

For my friends in the Northern U.S. and New England

whom think they understand cold

I submit this hourly temperature record

for my daughters home in

Fairbanks Alaska

and ask you note that in mid afternoon at 4pm

it was

33 below zero

…and remember that isn’t wind chill !

Living in Fairbanks, Alaska is invigorating! Thank God that the temperatures have been warmer than they were a few years ago. Haven’t seen -60 F or even -50 F for quite some time. Looking forward to warmer weather, -20 F. lol

For the readers who’ve never been to Alaska, when it’s this cold in Fairbanks, you will begin to see air quality alerts like the one in the forecast. That’s because Fairbanks is in a valley surrounded by higher terrain which creates air inversions. Downtown could be -40 while in the hills along Chena Ridge Road or Gilmore Trail & Ester Dome for example could be almost above zero or single digits below zero. And then you get the ice fog along with it that caused me a car accident in Feb. ’79 at -45 because visibility was less than 100 ft. Within a block of home on Front St.
