Why are animal rights more important than human rights?
Sitting back here at the cabin and reading about how world opinion is incensed over the killing of a Lion in Africa makes this old man completely befuddled. I know that in England like here in America there is a large majority of people who not only advocate for animal rights but at times resort to illegal actions to free these animals. There is also a large number of organizations that spend tens of thousands of dollars in attempts to “protect” wolves, bears and endangered birds by having legislation enacted to protect them.
We have seen legislation that: stopped the building of dams to be used for electric power, wind power farms because it would kill birds, limits placed on amounts of fish allowed to be caught and exploratory drilling for oil stifled because it is erroneously believed to endanger caribou. All this effort, time and money expended in the name of animal rights… so how can these same people turn a blind eye too and condone murder?

I must ask
why is the world more concerned
about an animals life
than that of the murder of a baby?

A matter of values, or lack of. We have allowed this to happen and now reaping the results.

because we have allowed others to decide for us …not because we want to ..but because we no longer have a voice…even as we write and others comment … the ones that really need to see or hear us …are either blind or can not hear….

Hey Pete – personally I believe all life is precious and as a race human beings need to really dwell upon this concept. For most of our history we’ve viewed animals as second class citizens at best. But now we’re just beginning to understand so many animals have a recognition of self and have emotions that match we humans in their range and depth. Before I can support the idea that we need to shift our support to human beings above that of animals I’d much rather we elevate the animals to our own ‘value’. This is rather like coming to recognize that all life is sacred and needs respect. Of course, as omnivores well up the natural food chain we will kill and consume other life forms; this is how Nature works. But doing so doesn’t mean said life forms are any less important or valued.

I agree with most of this comment. However, as someone who obviously appreciates animals lives, I’m sure you’ll be happy to hear that science has proved that humans are actually herbivorous animals (due to lack of digestive enzymes, lateral jaw movement, digestive tract length etc.) Therefor, we don’t need to exploit so many animals and we can forget this belief that we need to kill animals ‘because nature says so’. !

Hi! I believe that animal rights and human rights should be viewed as equal (because we too, are animals). I personally think that human rights are given more attention that animal rights in the media. We seem to care more about less important human rights issues that non-human animals rights to simply live. (Eg. Food production). But I suppose, there are many cases where humans are considered second best. I just personally believe that larger numbers of animals are considered as inferior in comparison to the number of humans viewed as inferior. Thought-provoking post though!
