Money, police and maybe a smile

May 8, 2015

indexWith the weekend ahead I just wanted to clear a couple small items from my desktop.

Here in Alaska the state legislature is on a two week break before resuming session. Why did they take the break will become obvious later but more importantly is why they even need an extended session. They started months ago facing a multi-billon dollar deficit in our state budget because of the collapse of oil prices, (over 90% of Alaska’s revenue comes exclusively from oil production). So one would conclude that balancing the budget would be the number one priority for the session….wrong.

They knew cutting services and department budgets would incite anger throughout the state so they trimmed a little here and there and passed it to the Governor. He hasn’t signed it, in fact he is proposing reinstating some of the reduced funding without linking it to how it will be paid for. The legislature proposed “borrowing” it from the states reserve (extra oil money that was saved and invested), but the Governor heard the cry from the people and did not accept the funding….yet.

Personally I think the two weeks off is so the legislators and Governor can see who protests the loudest over the cuts. They of course do not want to alienate the very people that can get them re-elected. It also seems to me that Juneau is working from a copy of the budget playbook used in Washington.

A Raleigh, North Carolina police officer Matthew Kohr is currently suing Starbucks because the lid, from a free cup of coffee, popped off burning him as it collapsed in his lap. The North Carolina police officer after being burned returned his police vehicle, got in his truck and drove home so his wife could photograph the burns and finally two hours later went for medical care. Is it only me or could this be one of those officers that should be weeded out of our nations police force?

Maybe we should ban the police from drinking coffee when….

A police officer that faces the possibility
of death everyday

A police officer who is trained to use a
Taser, shotgun, teargas, assault rifle and handgun safely
has a problem with the lid of a coffee cup.

Don’t you hate that? People are always looking for a handout or a way to cheat the system. I may just go fall off a building and sue gravity myself. :) -OM

a lot of cops are whiners…but if I were the store i’d not offer him any more coffee…wouldn’t want him to be injured again…no wait…better yet…i’d wrap it in duct tape and name it the “cop safe cup”
