Just another day…in Alaska

September 17, 2014

P.1Now that most of the leaves have fallen, it is no wonder that this morning I sensed a touch of cooler temperatures overnight. But still the bright sunlight dancing across the golden trail down the hill harkened for me to get out for a walk before it does get cold. The downside to observing all this beauty is my constant companion of late, gout, which has come back for a visit and this time it resides in my ankle so walking in the woods is out. Instead I had to content myself with watching the birds feed in a pre-winter frenzy and listen to a couple hours of talk shows and news as the tea induced caffeine did its magic.

and some of what was presented as news was……..

Maybe I just woke up in a parallel universe but this morning when I turned the radio on the usually politically incorrect Glenn beck was talking about men not knowing how to pack clothes for a vacation. Even more amazing was the leader of radio conservatism Rush was doting on the assault charge leveled at the ravens football player. Since when did conservative radio become a version of TMZ news? It seems to me that the media outlets are focusing on more visceral subjects and not on news that could effect our very lives?

My fellow Americans…..
I can remember as far back as Eisenhower, all the Presidents using this phrase when they were addressing the nation, it was intended, I guess, to make us feel a bond between the President and us common folk. But when they continually lie when speaking to their, ‘fellow Americans’, one tends to not pay attention any more. Prime examples are Bush, (no new taxes), Clinton, (I did not have sex with her) and of course obama.

Except for Bush who after passing a tax increase went on television and admitted that he lied, both Clinton and obama stand by what they said even after it was proved they were lying. When I was in school I was taught that the office of the President was the personification of honesty, knowledge and courage. Sadly today that is not the case, and our children are learning that you do not have to be honest to lead this nation.

The word ‘irony’ is defined in Websters as ”an event or result that is the opposite of what is expected”, and the prime example of this would be obama-care. I am not talking about how we were not able to retain the health care plans that we had before obama-care but the fact that obama said we would be saving money as opposed to our old health care plan. Well once again he is proven to be a liar because right here in Alaska it was announced that those who enrolled in obama-care will now face a 25% to 37% increase in payments over what they started with.

Today in a rare example of congressional bi-partisanship a budget extension was passed. No this is not really news, we all expected it, but will we remember it in November when these men are up for election or reelection? I think most Americans will not even hear about the extension because the media will talk mostly about the amendment attached on that bill that authorizes troupes to train men to fight Isis. How long do you think you could survive without living within a budget? Why should we let our representatives get away with this again?

And lastly for Alaskans, Christmas comes in October 2nd when we receive our PFD or Permanent Fund Dividend. It is our share of the interest on royalties the oil companies pay the state of Alaska for producing their oil, and this year our checks will be $1,884. Now some of you would say that is great it will help you pay bills and cover some of our winter heating costs, but this is not the case. A study has shown that almost 40% of Alaskans will treat that money like hitting the lottery and purchase items they they really have no need for. You remember the posting I did a while back….where we are indoctrinated by the media to need the latest this or that, well October 2nd in Alaska will be a prime example of that.

really look forward to your posts from this amazing part of the world! interesting point you make about the permanent fund dividend , a few years ago here in Australia the government paid a baby bonus – most family’s should have put the money towards their child’s upbringing but as you could imagine sales of big screen TV’s and other luxury items went through the roof!

Sorry to hear you are suffering with gout, Pete. I understand that is very painful & it sped up by quite a few years the retirement of Ray Thomas the flute player of the Moody Blues. The last few times I saw the band when he was still touring he was hanging onto the mike & has a hell of a time climbing the stairs to the stage.
I learned a long time ago that whatever Obama says, believe the opposite as his record bears that out. But the Tokyo Rose media will continue to cover his sorry ass as long as he’s in office. You’re right, all the people will hear is about how the extension is all about fighting Isis & not blowing another roof off the budget.
I, for one, would use my permanent fund dough for paying bills, because I don’t need the next best thing. The next best thing is the newest source of those 7 words George Carlin talked about as in “how does this &^%$#@!()*_+ thing work?”

Yes Pete and I wonder how many people will be getting those PFD checks that don’t even live there… They just have a PO box……. I have turned in several people down here that were getting them and haven’t lived in AK for years… They still Had AK tags on their vehicles too….

Just another day in politics, Pete… As for this country’s fascination with ‘things’…well, I could make a good case for the following postulate: as our materialism increases our spiritualism and ‘humanism’ decreases. Hang tough regarding the gout!

Surely you’ve heard Don Henley’s “Dirty Laundry”
