Zen & sun in Texas

You would think someone like myself who never goes into Fairbanks on the weekend because of traffic and the crush of people shopping would never go to a major mall outside Dallas on one of the last Saturdays before Christmas. Maybe it was because of the warmer weather effecting me but I went with my son and grandson and that nearby mall had traffic that was like rush hour in Philadelphia and inside it was a never ending stream of people. Seriously you had to dodge between packages, people and baby strollers to cross to the other side of the mall. I can only imagine if someone tripped, they would probably be stomped on until someone realized there were loose presents on the ground.

Who’s to blame for this artificial mass hysteria? Once again I point my finger unlovingly at the media, and  I am especially including the blood suckers in the advertising agencies who financially support all broadcast television. True it is their job to let us know about newer and better made products, but they have taken advertizing to a new level. For the most part the advertizements produced today are now making you feel inferior if you do not have the latest products. Look don’t believe me just think about (why do you really need the newest cell phone), did the old one stop working?

In previous posts I have vilified the news media for being bias and trying to direct public opinion, and once again they have proven their power by shaping, ‘over time’, the way we view what was once called Christmas. I know it has been written about for many years but what happened to Christmas? Why after decades is it now wrong to use the term Merry Christmas? Could it be because it has the word Christ in it?  Or maybe it makes it easier to just have a holiday in which we compete with each other to spend the most money and give the better gift?

I am not an in your face Christian, and I don’t not care what religion you practice (if any) but it seems that for many years now there has been a movement to remove Christianity from the public eye. Yet we are forced by the new political correctness to act with deference to other religions particularly the Muslim faith. And here’s the kicker I don’t care if you are Muslim or for that matter Jewish or even a Druid, it is our right as Americans to worship, or not, in any way we choose.

So as the hordes of shoppers continue to pillage the malls

I will gather with family and friends and

celebrate the Christmas season.

Jon was not able to post a comment so I am trying to post his email as a comment.
    “Hi Pete,
I see the comments are closed, so I’m emailing my reply.

Couldn’t agree more. As you no doubt know, we have the Mall of America about 20 minutes from our house. I go over there about once a year.

I’d like to see all these assholes who can’t say Merry Christmas refuse all their gifts, office parties, company bonuses, & don’t take the day off with pay; rather go in & work for free. Yeah, that’ll happen.

It’s irritating to me to see all these people who can’t wait to stop moving so they can start texting. Face to face conversation is fast fading away. I should be used to the noise living in the Twin Cities most of my life, but would rather skip this altogether. I’ve come up with a saying, “The best thing about Christmas is Jan. 3rd, ’cause it’s over!” And by that I mean the spending frenzy & fights over a tv set for God’s sake.

Well, the good news is on the way to work this am, about 2 blocks from our house, I stopped for 5 deer to make up their minds where they were going. I put my window down & wished them “Merry Christmas” & they took off. Guess they’re sick of it too. :)

Merry Christmas or in my wife’s tagalog, Malagayang Pasko (Happy Christmas)”

I also agree about advertising. They’re getting more cagey about it too which makes me distrust everything. It’s awful. This year my family and I have given to the Philippine disaster instead of giving each other gifts. My hubby and I still exchange a gift, but our family which is made up of only adults has decided to give money to the disaster. Do we really need more STUFF? Umm no. It felt good to help people who need it more than us. Do I want an iPad air? Sure I do. But do I need it? No. Glad to see this post and keepin’ it real here Pete.

Thanks so much for your contribution to the Philippines. You may or may have not seen that my wife is Philipina & her home town was hit almost directly by this typhoon. God bless you & your family & Merry Christmas to you & yours!

Oh! I was unaware your wife is from there. My sister in law is as well although her family was south of the disaster area. I’m so sorry to hear her family was affected. I hope they’re safe! Thank you for posting this. Its important to me to help others. I have much to be thankful for and want to share it. Merry Christmas and have a Happy, Blessed New Year.

Well, Pete, I know you will enjoy your personal time with the family. I share your disappointment with the commercialism of the holiday. The spirit we share for our Savior does not reign in this lifetime, but it will. In the meantime, keep your heart pure and know that it will reign in the appointed time. And by the way, try some sneakers. Those 10 pound boots will leave tracks in that civilized pavement down there!

Merry Christmas to You Pete! I couldn’t concur more with your thoughts regarding the rampant commercialization of Christmas. I lived my entire life in urban portions of the Midwestern lower 48 and somehow became numb to this nonsense. I finally realized my dream of retiring to south central Alaska – I live 7 miles south of Talkeetna and a bit east of the Spur – and everything has changed for me since I pulled the moving van into my driveway almost five months back. I knew rural living would be a huge paradigm shift and that would be accentuated an order of magnitude by living rural in Alaska but I also just knew this was for me. It took only a few weeks before my lifestyle slowed dramatically and I abandoned TV for sitting on my front porch just drinking in the immense silence, the wonders of Nature and the lack of man-made influences. My priorities have definitely come ‘undone’ and I’m very pleased with this outcome. I know I have a long way to go before I not just survive but thrive up here and I’m okay with that idea; indeed, part of the wonder and joy of this new existence is the learning that’s involved. It may have taken me 60 years to make my dream a reality but its definitely better late than never! I’ll be following your blog now as I enjoy what I’ve read. Enjoy the late arriving winter and keep on writing! And, of course, have the Merriest of Christmases and the best New Year yet!
