The good old days?

IMG_0702Those that have visited my blog long enough know that I do at times get carried away with a lot of doom and gloom or the end of civilization as we knew it. But I can not help but yearn for the more logical era of decades past. I can remember when I was in high school my father lamenting to me how the world was going to hell in a hand basket. How morality was a thing of the past and politicians were only concerned with one thing… lining their pockets with money.

Fast forward about fifty years and guess what, I have become him…. my father…. in thought, spirit and lifestyle. My father lived through the depression and survived with a concentrated focus on family, saving money and respect. Blinded by my youth I misspent many years focusing on the ‘whats in it for me’ philosophy. Then later in life it took a series of major tragedies to shock my system into seeing what is truly important. I guess I am one of the lucky ones for many millions of others walk around day to day in a haze and will never understand what we are doing to each other and our world, and that is just wrong.

Each morning my parents picture looks back at me

I close my eyes and hear my fathers words

“son someday you will be on your own

I hope you remember what I have tried to teach you”

Yes, as I look back, civilization does seem like gloom and doom. I remember when the main road along the Gold Coast of Florida was unpaved – now – even after widening, the traffic is ridiculous!

Life would be poor, indeed, were it not for perspective.
