Thoughts from the outhouse…

July 4, 2013

outhouseThere comes a time when enough is enough, and you tire of trying to understand the logic of why the nation is heading in a seemingly downward moral, patriotic and fiscal spiral. It is akin to a movie I once saw that had a radio announcer telling everyone to open there windows and shout that they have had enough and weren’t going to take it anymore. For the sake of my sanity today I decided to ponder a much lighter subject that has for some time been like a scab that constantly needs scratching. Something you can be assured very few others have even considered remotely worthy of a second thought, commercials on TV and AM radio.

Living out here on the edge there is no TV or cable, so I have for the last decade lived with DVD’s. The problem with DVD’s is if you do happen to spend any time in ‘civilization’ and turn the TV on you can’t watch it, because of commercials. How can anyone watch something for 5 to 8 minutes only to interrupted, usually at critical moments, with someone selling me shampoo, diapers or cars? If that wasn’t bad enough it is not just one commercial but two or three plus a reminder of what station we are watching and OH don’t forget that next on channel whatever you can’t miss etc, etc… Well you get the picture and how does one put up with that?

For me it is more AM radio but I still suffer the same fate as watching commercial TV. Every talk show is now running at the most 40 minutes or less of actual conversation and the rest commercials. If that wasn’t bad enough the host of the show when they break for a commercial or return from one spends a minute or more reminding you what they have planed for you later in the broadcast, and this after wasting another 30 to 45 seconds with some stupid bumper music.

I know the stations have to make some money but here’s a thought cut the number of commercials in half and charge twice as much. They could sell the price increase to the customer by saying that they will get more attention because of less commercials. If they didn’t want to charge more then at the very least quit spending time telling us what you are going to talk about and do IT! Then save another two minutes an hour but not having any bumper music.

One station I usually only listen to during football season is ESPN. Now I don’t know how ESPN is broadcast down in the civilized world but up here they give you maybe 5 minutes of information and the rest is hype about future ESPN shows. Then they have I guess a policy at ESPN that the announcer can not go more than 30 seconds without saying this is ESPN and don’t forget to check us out at ESPN.com. I can only imagine that the people who listen to this daily are so dense they never see that all they are getting is sound bites of news, sprinkled between mind control.

Now I feel way better getting that off my chest!

God how I miss the “real” Cost to Coast with Art Bell.

totally relate to this one…i’ve been living without tv for months now, and whenever i hear commercials elsewhere, they sound almost psychotic to me. it boggles my mind how people don’t notice this insanity…how invasive they are. but that’s sensitization for you…cheers
