The news media and earth changes

July 1, 2013

originalThe scorpion called across the desert floor as the sun poured down in relentlessly. The temperature was 134 degrees, hot enough to kill most humans unfortunate enough to be out for long in the sun. Looking out at the vast desert expanse one could only see the waves of shimmering heat rising back to the sun that bore it. No not science fiction just fact. In 1913 the temperature record for Death Valley was indeed 134 and back then we had not even heard of carbon pollution. Today they were calling for near record temperatures approaching 130 so is this global warming really man made or part of earth cycle?

This a longer posting than I normally write so for those who absolutely don’t want to spend the time and need the “sound bite version”……There is no historical increase in any earth changes only in the perception of them because the news media is now jumping on ‘every’ event that comes along. Now for the rest of us that want to understand the why and how, here is the rest of the story.

Earth changes?
If you listen to the news or read the headlines you would think that the winds of something big are blowing across this land and around the world. Without the distraction of civilization, (IE…a job and daily family life), I have the unique opportunity to observe, digest and ponder what would be oblivious to the harried overworked man or woman. Some no doubt would say I have way too much time on my hands and have gone off the deep end, but taken not as individual things or actions but as minute parts of a larger whole it could indeed look like something is brewing.

It gets hot and Al Gore calls it climate change, and says it is caused by man spewing carbon into the atmosphere. Yet scientist have found, over and over again, in ice core samples taken from both of the poles evidence that the earth has in millennia past gone through several global warm ups. The obvious example of which most of us were taught about in school is the past ice ages when most of the Northern American continent was covered in glaciers and ice only to have the ice recede to the poles because of the earth heating up. ( IE..without the aide of human caused carbon pollution )

But when we read or hear about the number of varied physical events happening around the globe and as we see the increase in the number of these events, one can only ask why now? Well that is not exactly true… if you are talking about events such as: tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, droughts, forest fires and near misses by asteroids and comets, in doing research for this piece I have found there is in fact not an increase in these events.

Lets look at just one of these events tornadoes. According to historical facts on record with NOAA, 2011 was the most destructive year ever for property damage since they began keeping records. That year we had 1,715 confirmed tornadoes including 6 F5 tornadoes. These numbers also ranks 2011 second or third as the most active tornado year ever. So why does it seam that we are having tornadoes every other week? The same reason I wrote about back in November 5th, 2012 in the posting ‘Lessons from Sandy‘, the broadcast news industry. They know disaster draws viewers and viewers mean more profits from selling commercial time on the air.

And more surprising if you think these increased tornadoes, hurricanes and floods have been caused by something man did, I invite you to read the article I found on ‘Sciencenews.org’ entitled…”Cleaner air may have brought more storms” Apparently it seems the study concluded that pollution during the 20th century appears to have suppressed North Atlantic hurricanes. In fact it is reported that “climate simulations suggest that these periods of low emissions eventually increased tropical storm frequency”.

I am totally surprised that the news media haven’t started something about the apparent increase in fly-bye’s from asteroids and comets. They did bombard us with 24 hours of replays of footage of the meteor that exploded over Russia, but I was waiting for them to link that with the number of new objects coming very close to the earth. Oh, and yes I checked those statics as well on the NASA web site, and was quite surprised to see there were hundreds of object each year we never hear about that do pass close by the earth.

So overall no major increase in physical events only the perception of them driven by the media. Yes the earth is changing but it has been since it was first formed. The earth like the humans that inhabit it change over time one can learn to adjust to it or they can hide from it.

So if you will excuse me for a while
the record heat here has made me woozy or maybe it was dodging that meteor last night
or it could be the minor earthquakes we have been having
but I still have to go out and lower my radio tower because there is a violent wind storm predicted
then again maybe I just read to many headlines

Also more tornadoes being caught on video these days with the advent of the camcorder, cell phone cams, etc. Interesting back in ’86 a local news station helicopter was up to do another event when a small tornado dropped out in the northern suburbs so the crew followed it for a few miles. One of the first recorded on film.
Del, I do remember global cooling in the 70s. The famous Time magazine cover & “the coming ice age”. Guess they decided red was more attention-getting & sinister than blue! LOL!

It give the politicians something they can rally around and use it to raise taxes.
