Children shooting children…

February 2, 2013

DSCF0056.JPGIt was just one of those days. You start out with the best intentions to accomplish something and you get sidetracked and end up doing something else. My daughter wanted some things shipped to her and I was going to break down a large Rubber-Made tote into two smaller boxes for shipping and then I went outside. Well I started to go outside but in my entryway there was a build up of snow. It seems the snow showers that were forecast arrived with a little wind, and it blew past the storm flap into the entryway. So I cleared the snow and opened the tarp to find a few snow drifts surrounding my truck, which led to…..

Well you get the picture, I ended up clearing the drive which for me took about an hour and a half even though most of the snow was only inches deep. Again it’s that ‘old age’ thing combined with a lifetime of bad habits, (smoking), and you end up with 5 minutes of shoveling with 15 minutes of sitting. The end result, as you can see, is a clear driveway but with my daughters re-packing still not accomplished. In between bouts with the snow I managed to listen to the radio and heard on the news of another school shooting. I used to think that the reason we are hearing about more disasters and shootings is because the media wants to keep our minds off of some other very important things like our government making new laws about gun control, immigration and the national debt.

But this almost weekly news about another child, shooting other children takes me back to an earlier post about respect and responsibility. Why was it when I was in grade and high school we did not have the number of shootings we have today? How about school children, during the time I was in school, not even being able to conceive of using a gun. The sad fact, I believe, is that we as adults are responsible for almost every shooting by the children of today. I know this sounds nuts but think about it. We allowed society as a whole to desensitize our children with more and more violent movies and computer games. Now the children today do not see firing a gun as something wrong since their hero’s kill a lot of people in the movies, and they are rewarded in computer games with the number of kills they get.

Their minds are conditioned to think gun when they face a situation that they can not handle otherwise. No, of course, it is not just the movies and games that are causing the increase of child related shootings. We have to add into this mix ‘our’ lack of parenting. If we did not ingrain the ideal of respect for each other we are also adding fuel to a potential fire. Through our own inaction when little Johnny beats up another boy, and just brush it off saying you shouldn’t do things like that, they learn there is no ‘real’ consequence for their actions.

Yes the groundwork for a new society has been and is being laid, where our children have a far different view of personal responsibility and respect for each other. I just wonder what our country will look like when our children’s children become adults.

And I pray for the sake of our children and grandchildren

that like always I am wrong.

I’m so glad I won’t be around forever to see the collapse that is coming. I honestly don’t know if I am going to have children.. but I do try to live life as a responsible person with respect to all individuals. Great post! Quit smoking. :)

Well, when I was in school I was picked on by students & some teachers for stuttering, which I’ve largely overcome. I see these stories & wonder why I didn’t do something rash or violent. My brother had 3 guns, not in a locked case but on a wide-open rack. I never thought about picking up one & taking it to school & doing a number on any of them. For one thing I shot a gun once & my ears rang for a long time. But the real reason was was because I had real PARENTS & it was intuition not to touch those guns without consequences!
Not directly connected, but this year at the Minn. State Fair they’re banning outdoor smoking except for designated areas! Like one columnist sarcastically says in the St. Paul Pioneer Press, they’re being penned in & put on display. I think fair attendance is going down this year. Maybe, as a a friend of mine said, we should ban everything that has ever hurt a person in the history of man-, oops, person-kind, in the history of human existence. I don’t smoke, but don’t mind the smell of a good heater going past my nostrils.

When I was in school …we knew something called by two names respect…and fear… we had a fear of the principal because to end up in his or her room meant mom and dad were going to be called leading to another set of problems …… respect was something we learned at home and carried to school each day and used in presents of every adult from bus driver ,teacher, janitor, lunch room ladies, bus crossing lady ,,,,any adult even if we did not like them ….. respect …yes sir ,yes mam,no ,please thank you ,,,,we did not even roll our eyes ,,,,that is long gone …I have to agree about all the things children are exposed to ….parents now days hurry everything from day one of coming home with the new baby they dress them in big people cloths…rush them through things … sorry the snow removal and old age slowed you down but then at our age we are suppose to slow down and wonder about life ….we only have a little time to get a few things right …great story ..slow down more and write more

seems you are revealing your age if you remember as I do how our parents taught us respect. The other side of the coin ‘fear’ not in the scary movie sense but a sense that we better do what we are told or it will be far worse when our parents found out about it.

So….I take it you shovel your driveway by hand? Me, too. Pain in the butt. I can’t imagine how people can live down in the lower 48. Give me my Alaska island living any day, where my kids were able to have free reign of the environment as soon as they learned the safety rules. Where when you make a friend, as one of my kids said once, you make a friend for life. And, Pete, I like me some changes in gun control, immigration, and national debt, lol.

i have never blamed the movies or games for violent kids now i personally think it’s the governments fault for stepping in and telling parents how they are allowed to discipline kids, i have always watched kill everything movies and i knew better than to go grab a gun and start shooting everything and everyone, i also knew that if i screwed up there was a leather belt hanging in the livingroom to remind me why i wasn’t gonna do something stupid. that damn belt hurt.
