Goodbye Dallas…

So far back in time it seems like another universe, when I was a teenager still in high school I took flying lessons. I did remarkably well and by my fifth flight hour my instructor had me doing everything from pre-flight to landings, it was just when he said I would have to go to ground school and learn the book work that I stopped showing up for lessons. I am saying all this to emphasize the fact that I really love to fly. From the small bush planes, that in Alaska flew so low you could see the claws of a rampaging grizzly, to the awesome sound of power that the ‘Blue Angles’ jets made when they hit the afterburners while only a few feet off the runway.

So it comes as quite a surprise to me as I sat in here in my plane at the end of the runway in Dallas awaiting the best part of commercial flying where the engines roar increases at that last second and you are pushed back into the seat as the plane works to defy the laws of gravity, that I was not as happy as I usually am on take off. I looked over out the window and saw the terminal shrinking in size and I had the feeling of loss not excitement or happiness at the thought of returning home. I have visited my family here in Texas before but I know this trip has been very different. Maybe a stronger bond was created because of the longer time spent here. Maybe it was the joy I received when playing with my grandchildren or the time spent with my son and his wife, I just do not know. I do know now that pictures, phone calls and memories are no substitute for being with them.

I also realize more than ever after this visit, that family is an important part of my journey down ‘life’s road’…

and that as the plane fly’s further away from my family…

there is an empty feeling where my heart once was…

Yea Pete, my first flying was done when I was a boy maybe 10 or so when my uncle Randy
(Just one of them, as they all had planes) Took us out to Circle hot springs in his bonanza. V tail….. After that I was hooked to. I took lessons in Fl at 18 and my instructor let me solo with 10 hours flying time… Then I got sick.. Hep and couldn’t fly for a while so I quit and then got a job up in AK. And I kick myself in the butt all the time for not finishing which I have been kicking around the idea of finishing up and getting my ticket…… Kind of warm out in Joy.. You will enjoy the drive back to sanity… lol Del

What a great visit and how wonderful that you feel that your son and daughter in law and the ‘grandies’ are so important in your life :-) Start making plans now to see them again – not in years, but soon. Keep up the connection, one way or another. Back in your cabin in the woods, in your quiet time, make some plans. :-)

i told you grandkids are addictive, there’s a difference to being with them then when everyone was younger and had children of their own with our own we had to teach and learn, with grandkids its their parents job to do that we now get to have fun with them and watch our children and see that the time we took to teach them has paid off,,

I’m glad to see your visit was so fulfilling to you Pete. Sounds like this time was harder to leave than any other, but also sounds like this visit was your best ever, too! Good to have you “back” & it was nice to speak with you over the phone while you were there.

What a wonderful post! I’m sorry you will be so far away form them. I agree that you should make plans to see them again! Ever thought of moving to Texas? It’s certainly not the same as AK.. but family is family

Light. My kitchen is the color of winter sky, combined with the light on the tree trunks you plod through. That photo, a painting, winter beauty.
