Sunset & road trip?

January 31, 2012

Back in the 18 and early 1900 there was a saying that ‘the sun never sets on the British empire’. Basically it meant don’t mess with Great Britain. In the eighteen hundreds they had the largest armada of warships of any nation on the face of the earth. Today they are putting some of these warships up for sale on eBay. Like America they are more concerned with the economy at home and now the sun sets quickly on the new british empire.

Here in the good old US of A we are walking quickly down the same road. With the announcement a couple weeks ago by our president that the military was to ‘downsize’ and the announcement a couple days ago by the Army, Marine and Air force chief of staff’s that they are beginning a troop reduction in order to cut the defense budget by close to a trillion dollars in the next 10 years.

I guess Mr Obama forgot to read the constitution of the United States. The primary reason for the establishment of the US government was as stated in the preamble to the constitution….’provide for the common defense’ of the Unites States. He it seems more focused on the next section which stated that the government should…’promote the general welfare’ of it’s people. If he read the history of England he would know downsizing the military can make you a paper tiger. While we are in the process of downsizing the Chinese are doing the opposite. They are building warships, planes and missiles at a rate that surpasses the US production during the second world war.

Guess it’s time I learned to speak Chinese.

Road trip?

OK lets do the math. My cabin has 4 inch walls, the outside temperature last night hit -48 and the inside temperature was 50. That’s 2 degrees short of a one hundred degree difference, and that my friends is cold!

I guess I am a wuss but when I woke up this morning getting out of bed into the ‘cool’ air was not my favorite thing to do. To compound the situation when I tried to make my morning tea the stove barely came on. It seems at these low temps the propane stored outside turned into a liquid $%#@. My neighbor Kara called me on the radio for coffee but who would want to go for a walk at that temperature. And for those back East who’s every newscast touts the wind about a wind chill of -61.

I always laughed at those who left the state every winter for warmer climate. Now those ‘snow birds’ seem to have more sense than I do.

Right now a protracted visit to my son, in Texas, next winter seems like a good idea.

Maybe thats why we celebrate up here when it warms up to 40 below!!!

ya gotta stop that drooling, it’ll freeze and then where will you be? Shirley and I watched North to Alaska a couple of weeks ago ourselves, guess it is just something to watch during the winter, when you are having cold weather or a storm and can’t be outside.
always funny how 5 degrees warmer can seem warm.

I see that somewhere in AK it almost broke the all time record of -79 and then broke the weather station! I remember at least -60 one time in Eureka. In the valley though…. Early 80’s.

As for Obumer I really don’t think he knows anything about how this country was founded.
It’s crazy here in Fl over our choices of Repubs we have to pick from today. But I am sure I made the right decision. Now lets see if others will. Vote i mean. Dam sham people complain about our illustrious tribal leader and then DON’T Vote…

Hey, thanks for the link! I read it with great interest since I’m a weather freak. Also read several of the comments about Jim River/Prospect Creek area.

I worked through there in the summer of ’76 & from there to Dietrich until November of that year. June of ’76 I was right in the Jim River area & there were still several FEET of ice in the creek! Too bad they can’t get something more accurate there.

I have a good friend who spent over 40 yrs. in Alaska & he has told me several times about a -82 reading at Tok.

A local note. Here in Mn. we’re coming up on an anniversary of a record of our own; the state record low temp. of -60 was set on 2/2/96 at Tower, a small town in NE Mn. An unofficial low of -74 was recorded “in the swamp” behind the house where this temp. was taken. I grew up about 70 or so miles to the w/sw of here. Here in the Twin Cities that morning it dropped to -33 just 2 shy of breaking the modern day record, although -40s show in pioneer records.

By contrast, 16 days of 40s & some low 50s this December & January, 45 today.

Take care & stay warm although looks like some relief coming.

Ummm, actually, the reason the sun never set on the British Empire, is, they owned little countries all the way around the world and no matter what time of day it was, the sun somewhere was shining on part of the British Empire.
This evening, it finally warmed up to above zero out here. There actually was a brief Chinook wind that raised the temperature up to almost 30 above zero from the 32 below zero I had yesterday.
