Must see TV???

Outside my hotel room window, the ruddy red color of the coming morning painted the tops of the mountain’s. Along with running water indoor plumbing and cable TV it was a great view. I had come in for a day of re-supply and this morning was a visit with the doctor. The fringe benefit of staying overnight was being able to spend some quality time with my daughter. Usually these winter trips are infrequent and rushed. Last night we had time to sit, walk and talk together without rushing and it was nice.

This is me so you know there will be a ‘however’ and this one pertains to television. The hotel had about 40 channels of programing, and I could not find one worthy of spending any of my time with. I would estimate that 70% of the programing focused on the ‘reality’ of different people, and contained nothing of socially redeeming value or interest, I think I would call it dumb TV. 25% dealt with what the ‘important’ people were doing or what they were wearing. The remaining 5% was news or educational shows. Just talking heads repeating the same crap over and over hoping this repetition would make it important. I included in this last 5% networks like the History and Discover channels. Who were last night dealing with the obvious and making it sound like they just discovered it.

What happened to television? Or was it that, for 48 years, I was part of the rat race living my life in a rush and looking for any form of escape that I thought TV was great? I can remember few great educational programs like: Cosmos & Victory at sea and I am sure there were more but age does funny things to one’s memories. But, was I also sitting in front of the tube watching programs that were as mindless as we have today?

No wonder we end up with the men we have running our country, we have been brainwashed with programing that has dumbed us down to accept whatever the guy on the talk or news show says is fact.

An example would be…. Over the years we have been told it is wrong to want people who are here illegally to want them sent back to there home country. We have been told that they are here to help us do work we do not want to do. We are told anyone who wants these people out of the country are racists. We are told that we can do nothing about sending them home so we should allow them to become legal citizens with no punishment.

Every day across this nation I can guarantee that you have heard some of what I have said above from some newsman, commentator or politician. Does repetition of a lie make it true? We have laws that have been on the books for decades explaining the proper path to citizenship. Why should those who work for years to be a citizen following the law be made to do so, if the majority do not?

Anyway I have to go back and watch TV I don’t want to miss a second of them telling me why some movie star is wearing a blue dress while she smokes some crack and shakes her baby.

..must see tv my ass

I guess I do belong in the woods

    Pete,
You’ve said it all. We have over a 150 channels on the dish ( which goes out in severe weather when you need it the most ) & my wife & I usually watch just 3-4, although we do enjoy the Filipino channels which was my main reason for getting the dish in the first place. As far as I’m concerned, their acting is better than these puffed-up Hollywood types.
On to more exciting? things. The snow banks at the end of the driveway are taller than me; over 6′. with more coming this week. Oh, 5 above is now described as “frigid” or “brutal”. As John Stossel says, “Gimme a break.”

Yes, they have “dumbed down” TV, but they have also Dumbde down almost everything else too.. Used to be you could read the paper and see vocabulary that would require you to look up a word or two, or one of the commentators on the news would use a term that required research… now they can’t even speak using correct grammar or tense. I think if I hear one more person say it was “funner” to do this or that this was the “funnest” I will scream!! I am really glad my kids were raised in the 70’s and graduated Hi School in early 80’s. I still had some reason to correct their grammar, and their table manners. No one cares today, and it is truly going to haunt us in the future. There’s my two cents worth too.. Right On Pete!!

“Just talking heads repeating the same crap over and over
“hoping this repetition would make it important.”

That’s why I can’t listen to political talk radio any more, or even sports talk radio.
Every little thing is a super major issue.
Could be a single thing Obama didn’t say, or a single thing the Quarterback did say, and the host of the radio show goes on, and on, and on, about it for hours and hours. In the end, there’s a whole team that plays the football game, and there are three branches of government with hundreds of politicians who put this stuff together and not one man, not the quarterback, not a single individual elected official, not a coach, etc, wields so much control as is worth of a single radio station’s entire devotion- 24 hours a day.

I can tell the people who listen to sports radio too, because they espouse all the same crap pontifications as the radio hosts, “the team shoulda done this”, “the quarterback needs to go”, etc. In life, real solutions solutions are never so simple. But the radio hosts will make you think the solution is oh so simple – why doesn’t they just “see it” why doesn’t they just “do it” – because the talking heads repeating the same crap over and over… are not just hoping this repetition would make it important, their repetition actually DOES make it important, if only to the loyal listeners who tune in every day. It’s a shame, because without these “talking heads” on the radio, people would have to read, figure out, and come to an opinion by their own reasoning. And everyone would have a different opinion. You never hear the followers of radio shows DISAGREE with the vaulted hosts, those same hosts who fill half their air time with ads so they can make lots of money off their loyal followers.

That’s why I listen to classical music on public radio.
58 minutes of music, 2 minutes of promos for other shows on the same station.

We’d be better off without all those talking heads repeating the same crap on the radio. It dumbs down the listeners. Without the hosts telling listeners what to think, we would be able to have constructive discussion with each other– discussions with the underlying belief that the person you are talking to actually has a valid point, and has a right to believe in it. We’d honestly consider their point, instead of disregarding it outright because it doesn’t completely dovetail with what we were told to believe by the talking head on the radio.

In other words, if you don’t disagree with what you hear on the radio, or read, or watch on TV, a good portion of the time, then you’re not thinking freely. You’ve given up thinking for yourself. And I don’t mean, this radio station is okay, but that newspaper is not. These four or five radio hosts are great, but those are biased liars. I mean disagree with all content from all sources. Because no one radio host, or station, or viewpoint is always right.

    And yes,
I’m very bothered that the Eagles failed to reach the Superbowl, again.
But I have my reasons that differ from what they say on the radio.

Politicans are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them. Have you ever wondered why, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, we have deficits? Have you ever wondered why, if all the politicians are against inflactiona nd high taxes, we have inflation and high taxes?
You and I don’t propose a federal budget. The president does. You and I don’t have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Respresentatives does. You and I don’t write the tax code. Congress does. You and I don’t set fiscal policy. Congress does. You and I don’t control monetary policy. The Federal Reserve Bank does.
One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president and nine supreme court justices-545 human beings out of the 235 million-are directly, legally, morally and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.
Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.

That is the start of the dumbing down of America. If we were all actually thinking, we would revolt against this idiocy.

    Off Topic

“To everyone who is calling for stricter gun laws in light of the tragedy in Tucson, may I offer this little tidbit: If guns kill people, then pencils misspell words, cars drive drunk, and spoons made Oprah fat! Remember: Hold the person accountable for their actions, not just the means they chose to utilize!!! ”

Gee, if I couldn’t have my gun, how would I put holes in floors or walls to run copper line for heating oil or propane. .357 mag is the correct size for the lines I run here. A drill bit winds up the insulation if you drill through, a bullet makes a clean hole through everything. Two nights ago, the cap clogged on my chimney. Again, .357 to the rescue. A couple of rounds through the buildup and my roof cap was clear. Besides, who in their right mind would try climbing on a metal roof with 3 feet of snow and ice on it?
