Satellite update and the missing post
As the wet snow falls and the roads ice up I realize that I must be the ‘glass half empty’ kinda guy. I did wait three days before posting the break in satellite communications but apparently three days was not long enough. Who would think that our HughesNet guy was going to be making a trip up North at the very time we needed him? Actually who would have thought that John, our internet man, would venture North with temperatures up here near freezing and rain, snow and sleet coming down?
In any event he handled our problem in record time and was soon on his way North to Coldfoot. For those of you who have seen my Dalton highway video you know that is a drive that even in good weather can be challenging. But I am sure John is one of the ‘glass half full’ guys and a true Alaskan to whom it’s just another day on the road. Speaking of just another day… as I skimmed the national press I could not find any mention of the power outage down near Anchorage anywhere. Not a big deal but considering it was the 106 MPH wind gusts that took out the power you would think it would merit a mention in the news.
Now for your consideration, amusement and consternation
the posting that was never published this past weekend.
It is not the fault of millions of Americans that obama is sitting in the White House.
It is not the fault of these same Americans that we have representatives
in congress who would sell their soul for a campaign contribution.
It is the news media and what they broadcast as news.
I really can not blame these millions of people because their free time is limited due to jobs, family and other commitments that they have basically become a ‘sound bite’ nation. We get our news from the radio and TV broadcast by news anchors that sound more like an opinion than news. Or we go on line and our home page has decided what it thinks is relevant news that we need to see. Or like on Yahoo they have a section called ‘trending’ and for the most part 40% or more is dedicated to music or movie personalities rather than news we need.
Sometimes it takes a while, months even, for ideas to fully form inside my mind. Today while changing the oil on my generator I had what may be considered an epiphany. For over a decade I was blaming our representatives in Washington and the millions of people that elected them. I have said that most are too busy to do any research on important matters and instead are more concerned with their survival or who will win the world series and who will get thrown off dancing with the stars.
I have said they only obtain their information about what matters when they watch the ‘sound bite’ news programs. If the only ‘news’ they get is a sound bite ‘cherry’ picked especially to slant the news a certain way then just maybe they are not at fault. Being old and having watched newscasts in the 50′s where for the most part both sides of a news item were objectively presented, I can now see why we are headed down this road to ruin.
It used to be that newspapers and newscasters presented news not opinion. They presented facts… facts that were checked and verified by at least three reliable sources. Currently some news casts replay verbatim any statement some politicians makes without verifying anything. Or they hand pick items that make those opposing a government policy look like terrorists. We all remember how they portrayed the World War Two Veterans who broke through the barricades at their memorial. They presented them like the war protestors of the 60′s rather than 70 and 80 year olds trying to pay their respect, maybe for the last time in their life, at the memorial.
Why didn’t they mention that the last time the government shut down they
didn’t block access to government memorials or National parks?
Because it would make the President look like he was doing this just to influence public opinion.
You call it news I’ll call it propaganda.
